How to check out a mover before you book

Moving is one of the few things you buy where you hand strangers everything you own. It’s worth ten minutes of checking. Whoever you end up going with, here’s what we’d suggest looking at:

• Read the recent reviews, not just the rating — a 5★ average from three reviews tells you far less than 4.8★ from seventy-five.
• Check they’re insured — ask directly, and ask what the cover actually includes.
• Get the quote in writing — hourly rate, call-out fee, minimum hours, and what happens if it runs long.
• Ask who’s actually doing the move — some companies subcontract the job out to whoever’s available.
• Look for a real address and a real phone number — not just a web form.
